Amazon Selling Fees 2021 – The Cost to Sell on Amazon

The profitability of your online business heavily depends on the expenses and selling fees that Amazon charges. Moreover, Amazon Sellers Central provides a breakdown of the current selling fees. However, with so many different fees to consider it can get confusing real fast, especially for the new sellers.

In this article, we are listing and clarifying the most important Amazon selling fees an Amazon seller should consider, when operating in the US market.

What are Amazon Selling Fees

Growing your profits requires an understanding of your cost structure. Many new sellers wonder:

What are the different selling fees on Amazon? and How much does it cost to sell on Amazon?

Firstly, as a seller, you need to choose a selling plan to sell on Amazon. Since the costs also vary depending on the plan you pick, make sure you select the one that suits your business the best. The choices are between a Professional or Individual selling plan.

Monthly Subscription Fee

Professional Sellers pay Amazon $39.99 every month but are not subjected to per-item fee. Therefore, the selling plan fee is the same regardless the amount of items the seller sells in a month. Individual sellers who sell less than 40 items a month, benefit from the individual plan and don’t have to pay the monthly fee.

Per-Item Fee

On the contrary, non-professional sellers benefit from the individual selling plan that does not include a monthly fee. Instead, Amazon charges $0.99 per unit they sell. This selling plan is beneficial until the point the amount of units sold in a month exceeds 40.

Amazon Referral Fee

Amazon charges a referral fee on each item sold. You can think of this as a “commission” to Amazon for using their platform. Accordingly, sellers pay Amazon a percentage of the total price or a minimum per-item fee, whichever is greater. The fee is deducted from your Amazon account after the sale is made. It’s important to note that referral fees are additional to selling plan fees.

Fulfillment fees

When it comes to the order fulfillment, Amazon sellers typically have two options to handle it: fulfillment by Amazon or by merchant.

This option is for the ones who want Amazon to handle the whole process, including picking and packing your orders, shipping and handling, customer service, and product returns.

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) fees are calculated based on the weights and dimensions of the products. Be careful with an additional fee named Long-term Storage Fee. Products are stored in Amazon warehouses and if they stay longer, you will be exposed to that one.

If you don’t take the risk of seeing unexpected fees, handle the shipping process on your way and want to control your business more, fulfillment by merchant (FBM) is your method. However, with this method, you have a lower chance of winning Buy Box, your products are not automatically Prime eligibility and as a seller you gave more responsibilities.

What are Amazon FBA Fees?

The sellers who have joined the Amazon FBA program do not have to worry about shipping, handling, and packaging to ship the goods. Instead, Amazon employees handle them along with order fulfillment related customer service. However, this means you have to pay for the service. To cover these costs, Amazon charges you FBA fee which depends on the size and weight of your product.

FBA Shipping Fee

Amazon charges shipping fees based on the fulfillment type. In other words, orders that are fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) the company provides services and charges sellers from using them. This includes fulfillment, storage, and optional services, along with selling fees.

The easiest way to determine the shipping fee is to:

  • Choose the product type (apparel or non-apparel)
  • Measure the item dimensions (standard or oversize)
  • Calculate the shipping weight (total weight needs to include packaging)

Additionally, Amazon adds a fee of $0.11 per unit for items with lithium batteries. This applies both apparel and non-apparel items in all size categories.

FBA Storage Fees

Since FBA sellers store their products in Amazon’s fulfillment centers, Amazon charges storage fees to maintain your inventory.

Amazon FBA storage fees are divided into two categories: monthly and long-term.

FBA Monthly Storage Fees

Amazon charges you a monthly storage fee if you have inventory stored in their fulfillment centers at the end of the month. The fee is based on the daily average volume that your inventory takes space in the warehouse. The volume is measured in cubic feet. Note that Amazon measures the volume based on a unit size when it is properly packed and ready to ship.

Here are the current monthly storage fees:

MonthStandard SizeOversize
January – September$0.75 per cubic foot$0.48 per cubic foot
October – December$2.40 per cubic foot$1.20 per cubic foot

FBA Long-term Storage Fees

If your inventory has been in the fulfillment center for more than 365 days, Amazon charges you a long-term storage fee. This fee is based on the volume of your inventory or the number of units you have stored.

Currently, the long-term storage fee is $6.90 per cubic foot or $0.15 per unit, and the seller pays whichever one is greater.
