What Is the Difference Between a TikTok Shop Affiliate and a Seller?

Short answer: A seller owns the TikTok Shop: it lists the products, ships the orders and pays commission to creators. An affiliate creator owns no inventory; they promote other sellers’ products in videos, LIVEs and links and earn commission on the orders they drive. In the US, an affiliate needs at least 1,000 followers, must be 18 or older and must pass identity checks, while a seller must verify its identity and business. A brand can do both by binding its own account to its shop as an Official Shop Creator.
Seller vs affiliate at a glance
| Seller | Affiliate Creator | |
|---|---|---|
| What you do | Own the shop: list products, set prices, ship orders, handle returns and set affiliate commission | Promote other sellers’ products in videos, LIVEs and shareable links |
| How you earn | Product sales, minus TikTok Shop fees and any commission you pay creators | Commission on orders placed through your content |
| Inventory | Yours | None |
| Who can join (US) | US-based seller with valid US ID; business sellers verify their business, and TikTok can ask for IRS documents showing the EIN | At least 18, based in the US, at least 1,000 followers, and passes Creator Identity Verification |
| Taxes and payouts | You can start selling without tax documents, but TikTok requires them once you earn $2,000 | Set up a commission account to receive commission |
The three kinds of TikTok Shop creator accounts
- Affiliate Creator: an individual creator who self-applies and can pick products from the TikTok Shop product marketplace. No link to a specific shop is needed.
- Official Shop Creator: the brand’s own account, bound to its shop with the same account name. No follower minimum, but it only promotes that shop’s products.
- Marketing Creator: an account a shop invites to a marketing bind. It can promote the bound shop’s products, and with at least 5,000 followers it can also promote other sellers’ products from the marketplace.
If you are a brand, how to use both sides
- Register as a seller. Have your US ID, proof of address and business documents ready, and make sure the details match exactly what you enter in Seller Center.
- Bind your own account as an Official Shop Creator. It lets your brand sell from its own videos and LIVEs from day one.
- Open your products to affiliates. TikTok offers open collaboration, where any affiliate creator can find and promote your products, and target collaboration, where you work with specific creators.
- Set commission by product margin. Commission is paid only on sales, so price it against what each product can afford after fees, samples and shipping. Our TikTok Shop affiliate guide covers how.
Exceptions
- Smaller creators have limits. TikTok says creators with fewer than 5,000 followers can post up to 5 shoppable videos per week.
- Some accounts cannot join. Government, politician and political party accounts are excluded, as are accounts with a record of having e-commerce permissions revoked.
- Rules differ by country. The requirements above are TikTok’s US rules. Other regions use different follower thresholds.

Follow-up questions
How many followers do I need to be a TikTok Shop affiliate?
In the United States, TikTok requires at least 1,000 followers for an Affiliate Creator, plus being at least 18, based in the US and passing identity verification.
Can a brand’s own TikTok account sell its products without 1,000 followers?
Yes. TikTok says an Official Shop Creator account bound to your shop has no minimum follower requirement, but it can only promote your own shop’s products and cannot use the affiliate product marketplace.
Do sellers pay affiliates before they post?
Not for commission. TikTok says sellers only pay commission when a sale is made, and it is paid automatically. Samples, flat fees or other terms are separate choices you agree with a creator.
