Does ChatGPT Traffic Convert Better Than Search, and How Do You Get More of It?

Answered by Hai Mag, Founder & CEO, Eva Commerce, with 20+ years in eCommerce transformation, marketplace optimization, and AI-driven automation.

Last reviewed: October 23, 2026

Short answer: Sometimes, but not everywhere. A study of 94 ecommerce stores by Visibility Labs found ChatGPT referrals converted at 1.81% in 2025, compared with 1.39% for non-branded organic search. A larger peer-reviewed study of 973 ecommerce sites found ChatGPT referrals converted better than paid social but below other traditional channels, with stronger results in complex product categories. Where ChatGPT traffic converts well, shoppers have usually narrowed their options in the chat before they click. To get more of it, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, keep product data complete and consistent, and publish pages that answer buyer questions directly.

What the studies found

Visibility Labs (2026)94 ecommerce brands with seven and eight figure revenue, GA4 data for January to December 2025, homepage and blog traffic excludedChatGPT referrals converted at 1.81% vs 1.39% for non-branded organic search, with revenue per session of $3.65 vs $3.30. Average order value was lower ($204 vs $238), and ChatGPT revenue was only 1.48% of non-branded organic revenue.
Kaiser and Schulze, Marketing Science (2026)973 ecommerce websites, about $20 billion in combined revenue, August 2024 to July 2025, last-click attributionChatGPT referrals converted better than paid social but below every other traditional channel. Results were stronger in complex product categories, and conversion rates rose over time while average order value fell.

So the honest answer is that it depends on your category, your comparison channel and your time frame. Both studies agree that ChatGPT is still a small share of traffic and revenue.

Why ChatGPT visitors can convert well

  • They arrive with a shortlist. Visibility Labs attributes the higher rate to shoppers refining what they need inside ChatGPT before they click, so they land closer to a purchase.
  • Complex products benefit most. Kaiser and Schulze found better financial results and higher traffic shares from ChatGPT in complex product categories, where a conversation helps buyers compare options.
  • Some of the effect is hidden. Both studies use analytics clicks. People who read a ChatGPT answer and later search your brand on Google show up as branded search, not ChatGPT.

How to get more ChatGPT traffic, step by step

  1. Let ChatGPT read your site. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that changes can take about 24 hours to apply.
  2. Keep product data complete and consistent. For shopping results, OpenAI says ChatGPT considers structured metadata such as price and product description from first-party and third-party providers, plus reviews. Shopify merchants are already connected through Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply to send a direct product feed. See how to make a Shopify catalog readable by AI shopping agents.
  3. Publish pages that answer the questions buyers ask. Put the answer in plain text near the top of the page, and keep specifications and prices the same on your site, marketplaces and feeds.
  4. Measure it properly. Use the GA4 AI Assistant channel or a filter on session source chatgpt.com, compare landing pages and key events with other channels, and add a “How did you hear about us?” question to capture buyers who saw you in ChatGPT but came back another way.

Exceptions

  • Small samples mislead. Visibility Labs notes that early 2025 months had only 15 to 37 ChatGPT-attributed conversions, which limits confidence. Check your own volume before drawing conclusions.
  • Tracking gaps happen. From about October 8 to 15, 2026, many ChatGPT links lost their tracking tag and showed up as Direct. See how to tell whether your ChatGPT traffic really dropped.
  • Lower order values. Visibility Labs found smaller average orders from ChatGPT visitors, and Kaiser and Schulze found ChatGPT order values falling over time, so compare revenue per session, not just conversion rate.
How Eva handles this

Eva’s Shopify SEO and AI search optimization work covers technical SEO, collections, product content, structured data, answer engine optimization and conversion strategy, so the pages ChatGPT reads are also the pages that convert.

Follow-up questions

Can I see ChatGPT visits in Google Analytics 4?

Yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends from search results, and GA4 has a default AI Assistant channel for visits from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and others. It does not include Google AI Overviews or AI Mode.

If I block GPTBot, will I disappear from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI says its settings are independent: OAI-SearchBot controls whether your site can be shown in ChatGPT search answers, while GPTBot controls whether content may be used to train its models. You can allow one and block the other.

Can I pay to have my products shown in ChatGPT shopping results?

Not in the product results. OpenAI says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships. Ads in ChatGPT are shown separately.
