How Do I Make My Shopify Catalog Readable by AI Shopping Agents?

Short answer: Most of it is automatic. If your store is eligible, Shopify Catalog sends your titles, descriptions, images, prices, options and availability in a structured format to AI channels such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and agentic storefronts is on by default. Your job is to make that data complete and accurate: check eligibility in Sales channels > Agentic, fill in categories, variants and attributes, map any custom fields with Shopify Catalog Mapping, and keep prices and inventory current. Shopify is clear that inclusion does not guarantee a product appears in a specific AI answer.

How to make your catalog readable, step by step

  1. Check eligibility. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic and look at Sources > Shopify Catalog. Shopify shows the number of products in Shopify Catalog, or an Ineligible warning with the reason.
  2. Meet the ChatGPT requirements. Shopify lists them: sell to customers in the United States, have products eligible for Shopify Catalog, agree to the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms, and complete your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy in Settings > Policies.
  3. Complete every product field. Shopify recommends accurate, detailed, descriptive titles, descriptions, images, categories, variants, options, prices and inventory. Put any required legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters of the description, as Shopify advises for ChatGPT.
  4. Map custom data. If titles, descriptions or categories live in metafields, metaobjects or tag prefixes, use Shopify Catalog Mapping so AI channels read the right source, and group separate products that are variants of one item into a single listing.
  5. Decide on compare-at prices. Shopify lets you choose whether Shopify Catalog shows compare-at prices, which AI agents might use to show sale pricing.
  6. Review your agent discovery files. Every Shopify store serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt with store name, sitemap, policies and discovery endpoints. Customize them with the matching Liquid templates if the defaults are wrong.
  7. Keep open-web access in mind. robots.txt rules affect only open-web crawling. If you block AI crawlers, products still flow through Shopify Catalog to the channels you activated.

Exceptions

  • B2B and wholesale products. Shopify says agentic storefronts support only direct-to-consumer sales and automatically excludes B2B-only products it can identify. Custom B2B setups built with third-party apps might not be detected.
  • Prohibited products. Products covered by OpenAI’s prohibited products and services policies do not display in ChatGPT product discovery.
  • No guaranteed placement. Shopify says each AI channel controls the final ranking, wording and shopping experience.
How Eva handles this

Eva’s Shopify SEO and AEO work starts with the Shopify Catalog eligibility check, then fixes product data, mapping and policies so AI channels read the catalog correctly. Store growth and conversion work sits in Shopify management.

Follow-up questions

Do I need an app or a separate feed for ChatGPT?

No. Shopify says products in Shopify Catalog are discoverable by ChatGPT without extra work, and OpenAI says Shopify merchant product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog.

Does blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt remove my products from AI channels?

Not from the channels you activated. Shopify says blocking AI crawlers affects only open-web discoverability and does not stop Shopify Catalog from sending product data to your active agentic storefronts. To hide a product completely, Shopify says to set it to Unlisted, which also hides it from search engines and your store search.

Are there fees for selling through ChatGPT?

Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT, beyond your standard payment processing fees. ChatGPT sends buyers to your own online store checkout.
