How Do I Get My Amazon Products Recommended by ChatGPT and Rufus?

Answered by Hai Mag, Founder & CEO, Eva Commerce, with 20+ years in eCommerce transformation, marketplace optimization, and AI-driven automation.

Short answer: Treat them as two different systems. Rufus, which Amazon renamed Alexa for Shopping in May 2026, answers from Amazon’s own product catalog, customer reviews and community Q&A, plus information from across the web, so complete listing attributes, honest reviews and answered questions matter most. ChatGPT cannot crawl Amazon product pages, because Amazon’s robots.txt blocks OpenAI’s search and user agents. ChatGPT builds product results from structured product data, third-party content and reviews, so your brand needs accurate product data and pages ChatGPT can read outside Amazon.

What to do for Rufus (Alexa for Shopping)

  1. Fill every catalog attribute. Amazon says the assistant draws on its product catalog and a knowledge graph of product attributes. Missing attributes such as size, material, compatibility or use case give it less to match against a shopper’s question.
  2. Write for use cases, not only keywords. Amazon says shoppers can search by activity, event and purpose, for example everything needed for a day of golf. Say plainly in your title, bullets and A+ Content what the product is for and who it suits.
  3. Answer the questions shoppers ask. Community Q&A is one of the sources Amazon names. Answer real questions with specific, accurate facts, such as battery life or whether an item is dishwasher safe.
  4. Earn reviews that describe the product. Customer reviews are another named source. Follow Amazon’s review policies, and fix the product issues that keep coming up in reviews, because the assistant reads reviews when it answers.
  5. Keep price and stock healthy. Amazon says the assistant shows 30 and 90 day price history, sets price alerts and finds deals, and suggests alternatives when items are unavailable. Out-of-stock or erratically priced products give it a reason to recommend someone else.
  6. Build credible coverage off Amazon. Amazon says the assistant also uses information from across the web, including sources such as The New York Times, USA Today, Good Housekeeping and Vogue for product and trend questions.

What to do for ChatGPT

  1. Make your own site readable. Allow OAI-SearchBot in your brand site’s robots.txt. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  2. Publish complete product pages on a site you control. Use clear titles, factual descriptions, prices, availability, images and reviews. OpenAI says ChatGPT considers structured product data and other third-party content.
  3. Provide product data directly. If you sell on Shopify, OpenAI says product data already reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. Other merchants can apply for direct feed access. OpenAI’s feed specification requires nine fields: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability and price.
  4. Earn mentions in the sources ChatGPT cites. Reviews, comparison articles and expert roundups are third-party content. Accurate coverage there is how a brand gets named in answers that start outside Amazon.
  5. Check what ChatGPT says today. Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, note whether your brand appears, how it is described and which sources it cites, and repeat on a schedule.

Exceptions

  • Personalization. Both assistants personalize. Rufus uses each customer’s Amazon shopping activity, and ChatGPT can use Memory and Custom instructions, so two shoppers can see different recommendations for the same question.
  • Prohibited products. OpenAI applies its safety standards and product policies when choosing products, so some categories will not appear in ChatGPT product results.
  • Robots rules change. Amazon’s robots.txt is Amazon’s choice and can change. Check it again before you plan around it.
How Eva handles this

Eva’s Amazon SEO and AEO work covers catalog attributes, listing copy, A+ Content and review and Q&A health on Amazon, and Eva tracks which brands AI assistants name for buyer questions. For brands with their own store, Eva’s Shopify SEO and AEO service works on the product data and pages that ChatGPT can read.

Follow-up questions

Is Rufus still called Rufus?

Amazon says Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. It is the same AI shopping assistant inside the Amazon app and website.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT product results?

No. OpenAI says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships. Ads in ChatGPT are shown separately from product results.

Why does ChatGPT link to other sites instead of my Amazon listing?

When we checked on October 22, 2026, Amazon’s robots.txt disallowed OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User agents. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, so ChatGPT leans on other sources for your product.
