How Much Does Shopify Take From a $10 Sale?

Short answer: On Shopify’s Basic plan with Shopify Payments, a $10 online card sale costs $0.59 in processing (2.9% + 30 cents), so you keep $9.41 before your monthly plan fee, shipping and product costs. Shopify takes no extra transaction fee when you use Shopify Payments. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify adds a 2% fee on Basic ($0.20 on a $10 sale) on top of that provider’s own charges. Higher plans have lower rates.

How to work out your own number

  1. Find your plan’s rate on Shopify’s pricing page for the payment type, since premium, international and wallet payments cost more than a standard card.
  2. Multiply the order total by the percentage, then add the fixed fee, for example $10 x 2.9% = $0.29, plus $0.30 = $0.59.
  3. Add Shopify’s third-party fee only if you take payments through another provider, and add that provider’s own charges.
  4. Spread your monthly plan fee across your orders to see the true cost per order. Our Shopify fees guide shows how to build a cost model per order.

Exceptions

  • Marketplace orders. Shopify lists 50 synced marketplace orders per month free, then 1% up to $99 per month.
  • Rates change and differ by country. The figures above are Shopify’s US rates on the day we checked. Always confirm on Shopify’s pricing page.
  • AI channel selling. Shopify also lists an Agentic plan at $0 per month for selling in AI channels, where you pay only when you make a sale, with online card rates from 2.9% + 30¢.
How Eva looks at this

On low-priced products, the fixed fee per order can eat a large share of margin, so Eva’s Shopify management work looks at bundles and order value alongside conversion and retention.

Follow-up questions

Does Shopify take a percentage of every sale?

Not as a sales commission. With Shopify Payments you pay card processing rates. Shopify adds its own third-party transaction fee only when you use a different payment provider.

Why does the fee feel so high on cheap products?

Because of the fixed 30 cents per online card payment. On a $10 order on Basic, the 30 cents is more than the 2.9% part, so total processing is 5.9% of the sale. On a $100 order the same rate is about 3.2%.

Are there setup fees?

No. Shopify says there are no setup fees on any of its plans.
