Is Shopify Still Worth It in 2026?

Short answer: Yes, Shopify is still worth it in 2026 if you want a store you own and can bring your own traffic. Plans on Shopify’s US pricing page run from $29 a month (Basic, billed yearly) to Plus from $2,300 a month, and online card payments on Basic cost 2.9% + 30 cents. It is not worth it if you have no plan to drive traffic, because Shopify gives you the store, not the shoppers.

What Shopify costs in 2026 (US pricing page)

PlanBilled yearlyBilled monthlyNotes from Shopify’s page
Basic$29/month$39/monthFor solo entrepreneurs; 10 inventory locations; online card rate 2.9% + 30 cents with Shopify Payments
Grow$89/month$105/monthUp to 5 staff accounts
Advanced$359/month$399/monthUp to 15 staff accounts; live third-party shipping rates
PlusFrom $2,300/monthFrom $2,300/monthUnlimited staff accounts; unlimited B2B catalogs; fully customizable checkout
Agentic$0/month$0/monthFor selling in AI channels through Shopify’s Catalog; you pay only when you make a sale

Worked example on Basic with Shopify Payments: a $50 online order with a standard card costs 2.9% x $50 + $0.30 = $1.75 in processing. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify’s plan comparison lists a 2% third-party transaction fee on Basic on top of that provider’s own fees.

How to decide if Shopify is worth it for your brand

  1. Decide what the store is for. Shopify is worth it when you want a brand home you control: your own customer list, pricing, bundles, subscriptions and email and SMS. If you only want to sell where shoppers already search, a marketplace may be enough on its own.
  2. Plan traffic before you build. Shopify does not send you shoppers the way a marketplace does. Budget for paid acquisition (Google, Meta), SEO and creators, and judge the store on contribution margin after acquisition cost, not on revenue.
  3. Pick the plan for your team and volume, not features you will not use. Most new brands start on Basic. Grow and Advanced mainly add staff accounts and shipping and regional tools. Plus is for complex or high-volume businesses.
  4. Count the full stack. Plan fee, payment processing, apps, theme, shipping and any marketplace order syncing (Shopify lists the first 50 synced marketplace orders a month as free, then 1% up to $99 a month on Basic).
  5. Review after 90 days. Look at conversion rate, average order value, blended customer acquisition cost and repeat purchase rate. If repeat customers and margin are not building, fix conversion and retention before adding more ad spend.

Exceptions

  • Third-party payment providers. Using a gateway other than Shopify Payments adds Shopify’s third-party transaction fee (2% on Basic per the plan comparison), which changes the math for low-margin products.
  • International and premium cards. Online premium card rates are 3.5% + 30 cents and international cards add 1%, so stores with many overseas shoppers pay more per order.
  • Marketplace-only brands. If almost all your demand is on Amazon or Walmart and you have no plan to drive your own traffic, a Shopify store can sit idle and cost money every month.
  • AI shopping channels. Shopify’s $0 Agentic plan lets you list products in its Catalog for AI channels and pay only when you sell, which is a cheaper way to test that channel than a full store.
  • Prices change. These are the US prices on Shopify’s pricing page on October 30, 2026. Check the page before you choose a plan.
How Eva handles this

Eva’s Shopify management runs a phased plan: days 0 to 30 audit the store, pricing and operations and fix product pages and conversion structure; days 31 to 90 expand SEO and paid acquisition and launch lifecycle and retention programs; days 91 to 180 scale budgets based on profitability. Eva’s bookkeeping reports monthly contribution margin by SKU, which is how Eva judges whether the store is worth its cost.

Follow-up questions

How much does Shopify cost per month in 2026?

On Shopify’s US pricing page, Basic is $29 a month billed yearly or $39 monthly, Grow is $89 yearly or $105 monthly, Advanced is $359 yearly or $399 monthly, and Plus starts at $2,300 a month. New stores get a 3-day free trial, then $1 a month for 3 months.

How much does Shopify take from a $50 sale?

On the Basic plan with Shopify Payments, the online standard card rate is 2.9% + 30 cents, so $1.75 on a $50 order. Premium cards are 3.5% + 30 cents and international cards add 1%. Apps, themes and shipping are separate costs.

Is Shopify better than selling on Amazon?

They do different jobs. Amazon brings shoppers who are already searching, and charges referral and fulfillment fees per sale. Shopify gives you your own store and customer data, but you have to bring the traffic. Many brands run both, with Shopify as the brand home and Amazon for marketplace demand.
