When Should You Stop Spending on an Amazon PPC Campaign?

Short answer: Stop or pause Amazon PPC on a target when the product is out of stock, when that target stays above your break-even ACOS after a fair sample of clicks, when the listing cannot convert, or when you are discontinuing the product. Prefer pausing wasteful targets over turning off all paid traffic. Write the break-even ACOS, minimum test clicks and stock rule before you spend.

Stop or pause when

  1. The product is out of stock or about to be. Paid clicks on an unavailable offer waste budget and can hurt conversion rate.
  2. The target is above your break-even ACOS with enough data. Pause or negate that search term, ASIN target or match type. Keep the rest of the structure.
  3. The listing cannot convert. If main image, title, price or reviews are broken, fix the offer before buying more traffic.
  4. You are funding a product you are discontinuing. Harvest remaining inventory, then stop.
  5. Account or policy issues block delivery. Fix eligibility (including Featured Offer where required) before spending again.

Do not stop just because

  • ACOS spiked for a few days during a launch or a stock recovery.
  • One report looks bad while contribution profit and organic rank on priority terms are still improving.
  • A competitor bid up overnight; re-check search-term quality first.

A simple decision rule

For each campaign or target, write the break-even ACOS from your contribution margin, the minimum clicks you will treat as a fair test, and the stock rule. If the target fails the ACOS test after that sample, or fails the stock rule, pause it. If the whole ASIN fails, pause ASIN-level spend and fix the offer.

Exceptions

  • Brand defense terms may run above break-even on purpose for a capped budget.
  • Launch periods may accept a higher ACOS with a written end date.
  • Amazon’s own budget tools spend over a calendar month and are not even day to day, so a single expensive day is not by itself a reason to kill a campaign.
How Eva handles this

Eva ties bids to ranking stage, search-query performance and low-stock pull-back on Amazon PPC management, and agrees a dated baseline and KPI list before scale. For the budget math, see how much to spend on Amazon PPC.

Follow-up questions

Should I pause a campaign that is above break-even ACOS?

Often yes for that targeting, after you have enough clicks to trust the read. First check stock, listing conversion, and whether a tighter match type or negative would fix it cheaper than a full pause.

Is it bad to stop PPC completely?

Turning off all paid traffic can drop visibility on keywords that still need defense or harvest. Prefer pausing wasteful targets over a blanket stop, unless the product is out of stock or being discontinued.

How long should I wait before judging a new campaign?

Long enough to collect a meaningful sample of clicks for that ASIN and match type, and at least one full weekly review cycle. Do not judge a launch campaign on one or two days of spend.
