Do I Need an LLC to Sell on TikTok Shop?

Short answer: No. TikTok Shop does not require an LLC. In the U.S. you can register as an Individual using your own name, a U.S. ID and the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN, or as a Sole Proprietorship, Corporation or Partnership if you have a business. Choose the type that matches your setup today, because switching later means a formal entity change that freezes your funds until it is approved.

TikTok Shop business types compared

Business typeWho it is forWhat TikTok asks for
IndividualYou sell under your own name, not as a registered businessU.S. passport, driver’s license, state ID or permanent resident card; last 4 digits of SSN or ITIN; proof of address; W-9 for tax purposes
Sole ProprietorshipYou own an unincorporated business by yourselfLegal business name, EIN if you have one, registered business address, owner details and SSN; if you have no EIN, TikTok says to choose Individual instead
CorporationA legal entity incorporated with the secretary of state, separate from its ownersBusiness details and EIN, a primary business representative, Ultimate Beneficial Owner details for anyone owning 25% or more, and an IRS document (147C, 252C or a CP 575 notice) if proof of business is requested
PartnershipA business owned by two or more peopleSame business documents as a corporation, plus the partnership tax form TikTok requests (Form 1065)

TikTok has no separate “LLC” option. Its tax form list includes a single-member LLC (Form 1040) and a multi-member LLC (Form 1065 or Form 8832), but its guides do not say which of the four business types an LLC should pick. Confirm that with TikTok Shop Seller Support or your tax professional before you submit.

Steps to register the right way

  1. Check the basic rules. You must be 18 or older, live in the U.S., hold an accepted U.S. ID, and use an email and phone number that have not opened another shop. Politicians cannot become sellers.
  2. Pick the business type that matches your legal setup today. Individual if you sell under your own name, Sole Proprietorship if you have an unincorporated business with an EIN, Corporation or Partnership if you have a registered entity.
  3. Gather matching documents. TikTok rejects expired, cropped or paper IDs, photos of screens and files over 10 MB. The name, date of birth and address you type must match your ID and proof of address exactly.
  4. Decide which address customers will see. Your business address is shown on product detail pages. If it is your home, use the Certify checkbox so only part of it is shown.
  5. Have tax documents ready. You can list and sell before submitting them, but only until you earn $2,000. After that you must submit them to keep selling and get paid.

Exceptions

  • Owners outside the U.S. TikTok’s business registration FAQ refers to a U.S. Business Representative, someone based in the U.S. who is authorized to act for the company. TikTok accepts a non-U.S. passport for Ultimate Beneficial Owner verification, but Individual and Sole Proprietorship sellers must live in or have their primary business address in the U.S.
  • Up to five shops. You can register up to five seller accounts with the same business or personal details, as long as each shop uses its own email address and phone number.
  • Changing entity later costs time. An entity change freezes funds until 24 hours after approval, unbinds your bank accounts, removes an Official Shop badge and can deactivate products that need brand or category qualifications until you reapply.
How Eva handles this

When Eva runs a TikTok Shop management engagement, the first 30 days cover TikTok Shop setup and product selection, then the creator pipeline and affiliate onboarding. For founders who decide they want a company first, Eva’s company formation service sets up a U.S. LLC or C-Corp, the state of formation, EIN, registered agent, operating agreement and U.S. banking. Pick the business type with your tax professional before you register, because changing it later freezes payouts during the switch.

Follow-up questions

Can I sell on TikTok Shop with just my Social Security number?

Yes. TikTok’s Individual business type is for selling under your own name, and it asks for a valid U.S. ID plus the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN. A sole proprietor without an EIN is told to register as an Individual.

Will TikTok show my home address to buyers?

TikTok says U.S. regulations require every seller’s business address to be shown on the product detail page. If the address you enter is your home, tick the Certify checkbox during registration and TikTok shows only a partial address.

Can I switch from Individual to an LLC or corporation later?

TikTok’s business types guide says the type cannot be changed after registration, but its newer Changing your Seller Entity guide (October 2026) describes a formal transfer from Individual or Sole Proprietorship to a Corporation or Partnership. Funds are frozen until 24 hours after approval, bank accounts are unbound, and some brand and category qualifications must be reapplied for.
