How Much Does Amazon Take From a $100 Sale?

Short answer: On a $100 sale, Amazon’s referral fee is $15 in most categories, such as Home and Kitchen, and ranges from $8 (Consumer Electronics) to $17 (Clothing) in other common ones, with a few higher, such as Jewelry at $20. On top of that you pay $0.99 per item on the Individual plan or $39.99 a month on Professional, plus FBA fulfillment and storage if Amazon ships the order. Advertising, returns and product cost come out of what is left.

Referral fee on a $100 sale, by category

These are computed from Amazon’s published referral fee table for a $100 total price (list price plus any shipping and gift wrap). The selling plan fee comes on top.

How to work out what you keep

  1. Confirm your fee category. Amazon notes that a product’s fee category may differ from the category shoppers see, so check the fee category guidelines for your item.
  2. Add the referral fee. On a $100 Home and Kitchen item, that is $15.00.
  3. Add the plan cost. $0.99 per item on the Individual plan, or your share of the $39.99 monthly Professional fee.
  4. Add fulfillment. With FBA, fulfillment costs depend on the item’s price, weight and dimensions, plus monthly storage and possible aged inventory, returns processing and inbound placement costs. Shipping it yourself means your own carrier and packing costs.
  5. Add advertising, returns and product cost. What is left after all of these is your contribution profit on the sale, which is the number to manage, not revenue.

Exceptions

  • New sellers and new brands. Amazon promotes referral fee waivers for new-to-Amazon brands in their first year, and for new sellers the FBA New Selection program gives eligible new products free monthly storage and referral fee discounts or waivers if you create an FBA shipment within 90 days of your first buyable listing. Check eligibility before you count on them.
  • Tiered categories. Some categories, such as Furniture, Watches, Jewelry and Compact Appliances, charge a lower rate only on the portion of the price above a threshold, so the effective rate falls as the price rises.
  • Minimum fees. Most categories have a $0.30 minimum referral fee, which matters for low-priced items, not $100 ones.
How Eva handles this

Eva builds this calculation per SKU. Eva’s ecommerce bookkeeping reconciles Amazon payouts line by line (fees, refunds, FBA charges, reimbursements), calculates COGS with landed cost, and reports monthly contribution margin by SKU after FBA fees, storage, advertising and returns. In full-service Amazon management, contribution profit is part of the dated baseline that results are measured against.

Follow-up questions

Does Amazon charge its referral fee on shipping?

Yes. Amazon says an item’s total price includes the list price plus any shipping and gift-wrapping charges, and the referral fee is a percentage of that total or a minimum amount, whichever is greater.

Is the Individual or Professional plan cheaper?

Individual costs $0.99 per item sold and Professional costs $39.99 per month. Professional costs less once you sell more than about 40 items a month (40 x $0.99 = $39.60), and Amazon lets you switch or cancel plans at any time.

How do I find my FBA fee for a $100 product?

Amazon bases FBA fulfillment costs on the product’s price, weight and dimensions, and charges storage monthly by cubic feet. Enter your product’s dimensions, weight, category and price in Amazon’s Revenue Calculator to get the estimate for that item.
