Is Selling on TikTok Shop Worth It?

Short answer: Selling on TikTok Shop is worth it when your product keeps a profit after TikTok’s referral fee (6% in most US categories), the creator commission you offer, fulfillment and returns, and when you can keep creators supplied with samples. It is usually not worth it for low-margin products that cannot fund creator commissions, or for products with high return rates. Check the per-unit math before you list.

What a TikTok Shop sale costs you

CostWhat TikTok publishesApplies when
Referral fee6% in most US categories; 5% for five fine-jewelry sub-categories (Diamond, Gold, Jade, Platinum and Carat Gold, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald) and Pre-Owned; Collectibles and Pre-Owned pay 3% on any portion of a sale over $10,000Every completed order. Base = customer payment + platform discount, minus tax, and it includes shipping the customer paid
Creator commissionA rate you set from 1% to 80% per product; a Target Collaboration rate always overrides the Open Collaboration rateSales made through creator videos, LIVEs or showcases
Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT)Per-unit fulfillment fee by chargeable weight; storage free for the first 60 days; FBT items ship free to shoppers by default since June 16, 2025Only if you use FBT
ReturnsReferral fee refunded minus a 20% Refund Administration Fee, capped at $5 per SKU; FBT return handling is billed per unit since June 1, 2026Refunds, returns and cancellations
PayoutSettled after delivery when no refund or return request is open, once the $1 payout threshold is metEvery order

Worked example: a $25 home decor item, no customer-paid shipping, no platform discount. The referral fee is 6% x $25 = $1.50. Everything else (creator commission, fulfillment, samples, ads, returns and your product cost) comes out of the remaining $23.50, so the question is whether enough is left after those.

How to decide if it is worth it for your product

  1. Work out contribution per unit. Price minus product cost, the referral fee, the creator commission you plan to offer, fulfillment, a returns allowance and ad spend. If that is negative at the commission creators expect, the channel will not pay.
  2. Choose fulfillment. Compare shipping yourself with FBT. FBT gives free shipping by default; if you opt out, a $30 free shipping threshold applies, shoppers pay $5.99 under it, and TikTok reimburses you $0.75 per unit on those orders. TikTok notes opted-out products may sell less.
  3. Set commissions on purpose. Keep products in Open Collaboration so all creators can find them, and use Target Collaborations with a higher rate for creators you want. New rates take effect 5 days after edits for Target and 30 days for Open, so plan launches ahead.
  4. Budget samples. TikTok says products that offer relevant free samples rank higher when recommended to creators. Samples shipped through FBT pay the normal fulfillment fee.
  5. Judge on settled orders. Payouts arrive after delivery, and returns can claw back revenue, so review margin on settled orders after a full month, not on day-one GMV.

Exceptions

  • Fine jewelry, pre-owned and collectibles. Five fine-jewelry sub-categories and Pre-Owned pay 5%, and Collectibles and Pre-Owned pay 3% on any portion of a sale above $10,000, which changes the math for high-ticket items.
  • Virtual goods. Digital products are invite-only on TikTok Shop, capped at a $500 listing price, and are generally non-returnable and non-refundable under TikTok’s rules.
  • Product quality enforcement. Since September 2026 TikTok can reduce visibility for products that repeatedly fail customer expectations, so a product that keeps disappointing buyers can lose reach as well as margin.
  • Return addresses. Since August 5, 2026 sellers must send returns to addresses they own or are authorized to use; residential or unaffiliated return addresses can lead to suspension.
  • Promotional plans. TikTok’s referral fee update says new sellers on promotional plans keep them until the promotional period ends, so early fees can differ from the standard rate.
How Eva handles this

Eva’s TikTok Shop management starts with TikTok Shop setup and product selection, a creator pipeline and affiliate onboarding in days 0 to 30, then creator expansion and paid amplification of winning creatives in days 31 to 90. Eva’s software runs creator outreach at scale, with hundreds of samples a month, and Eva has a direct line to TikTok Shop. For the margin question, Eva’s ecommerce bookkeeping reports monthly contribution margin by SKU after fees, advertising and returns.

Follow-up questions

How much does TikTok Shop take from a $25 sale?

In most US categories the referral fee is 6% of what the customer paid plus any platform discount, minus tax. On a $25 item with no customer-paid shipping and no platform discount, that is $1.50. Creator commission, fulfillment and ads are separate costs on top.

Do I still pay the referral fee if the customer returns the item?

TikTok refunds the referral fee on a refund, return or cancellation, minus a Refund Administration Fee of 20% of the referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU since May 15, 2025. On the $25 example that is $0.30. No admin fee applies to creator sample refunds under “buy now refund later” or to eligible pre-shipment auto-cancellations.

Do I have to use Fulfilled by TikTok?

No. You can ship orders yourself or use Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT). FBT charges a per-unit fulfillment fee by weight, gives the first 60 days of storage free, and makes FBT items free shipping for shoppers by default unless you opt out.
